SUBJECT: Theatre Program presents a bawdy look at Art and Life in early Eighteenth Century England: The Art of Success by Nick Dear

DATE: November 7, 2005

London in the 1730's. Two young men, William Hogarth and Henry Fielding, are determined to make their mark in the great city. Fielding will eventually write Tom Jones and Hogarth will go on to become perhaps the most famous printer and engraver of all time. Meanwhile, they struggle with political intrigue and sexual temptation in the fleshpots of the capital as they try to find a way to maintain their artistic integrity and still make money.

Written in a mixture of the baroque and the scatological (the language will be familiar to fans of the HBO series Deadwood), Nick Dear gives us a picture of the social and sexual underbelly of a great city at a time of political, sexual and artistic upheaval.

The play is at once outrageously funny and intellectually provocative. What is the right balance between art and business? When do artistic freedom and sexual licence part company? What is art? What is love?

The Art of Success will be performed by students in the second, third and fourth years of the Theatre Program. The set design is by Ken Livingstone with costume design by visiting guest designer Dylan Cag, lighting design by Jim Chalmers-Gow and original music composed by Ian Mennie. It is directed by the Head of the Schoolof Fine Arts, Ken Livingstone.

The Art of Success runs from Nov. 16 through Nov. 19 at 8 p.m.nightly in the School of Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are available at the College Bookstore or at the Box Office on the evening of each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
