SUBJECT: The Rise and Fall of Care of the Sick: A History and its Legacy

The Margaret D. McLean 2006 Lecture in Nursing will be held Thursday, April 6, 2006 starting at 5 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. The lecture is part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Memorial's School of Nursing and features Dr. Sioban Nelson, dean and professor of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. Her topic is The Rise and Fall of Care of the Sick: A History and its Legacy. Admission is free and parking is available in Lot 9 off Westerland Road. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.
Dr. Nelson's talk will address the problem of too few nurses and the increasing need for nurses. This problem is far deeper than a recruitment challenge to the nursing profession, explained Dr. Sandra LeFort, director of the School of Nursing at Memorial. "The bigger question rests with the place of care of the sick itself in contemporary society. Dr. Nelson's lecture will take a tour through the history of nursing and examine the social and political importance of care of the sick over time to shed light on these very contemporary concerns."
The Margaret D. McLean Lecture in Nursing honours the memory of Margaret McLean, the second director of the School of Nursing (1973-1984). She had a distinguished nursing career in practice and education and consulted both nationally and internationally.
