Memorial University’s Board of Regents met in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Sept. 7-8 to explore the theme “Memorial University’s Strategy for Labrador and Points North.”

The regents met with members of local organizations and communities, including aboriginal groups. They also visited the College of the North Atlanticand the Goose Bay Air Base.

The meeting in Labrador follows similar meetings in Grand Falls-Windsor and St. Anthony in 2004 and 2003, respectively. “It is reflective of the regents’ desire to learn more about the regions of the province and to engage in discussions of major issues to the university,” said Dr. Axel Meisen, president of Memorial University.

“The information from the Labrador meeting will be integrated into the university’s overall strategic planning process, which is currently underway.”

Dr. Meisen said the regents also discussed the Ivany report on the reporting structure for Sir Wilfred Grenfell Collegeand related developments. It was decided to defer further discussion to a special meeting which will take place after the open meeting, scheduled for 2 p.m.on Sept. 19 at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. The regents will make their decisions on the reporting structure of the college at their regular meeting of Oct. 20.
