Memorial University’s Harris Centre will host a regional workshop in Economic Zone 14 in partnership with the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) at the Waterfront Premises, Barbour Living Heritage Village, Newtown, New-Wes-Valley, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2005. As a prelude to the workshop and to stimulate public debate, on the evening of Nov. 30 the Harris Centre will hold a Memorial Presents session on the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery, titled Fisheries Policy and Rural Revitalization: an Integrated Approach.
On Dec. 1, the Harris Centre will host a regional workshop in partnership with the KEDC. The purpose of the workshop is to promote the university’s research, teaching and outreach relevant to the region, the stakeholders priorities, and identify new opportunities for collaboration. The Harris Centre will produce a report from the session to be distributed to all participants.
Organizers of the workshop hope that the sessions will allow for sharing of information between Memoria lUniversity faculty, students and staff and local stakeholders, with the potential to build linkages/partnerships.
“This workshop will be an important opportunity to first, share information between Memorial University faculty, students and staff and stakeholders, and second, to promote Memorial’s research activities and illustrate how this research can benefit different regions in the province,” said Dr. Robert Greenwood, director of the Harris Centre. “The expected outcome is that this shared knowledge may lead to partnerships between Memorial University and local stakeholders in regional policy and development.”
The information from the workshops, including Memorial activities and regional priorities, will be added to the Harris Centre Regional Inventory and will be updated on an annual basis. The Harris Centre will host four regional workshops annually, in the Labrador, Western, Central and Avalon regions of the province.
The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development (The Harris Centre) was approved by the Memorial University Board of Regents on Sept. 8, 2004, and announced Oct. 1, 2004. It is named in honour of Memorial University scholar and president emeritus, Dr. Leslie Harris. The Harris Centre is tasked with coordinating and facilitating the university’s educational, research and outreach activities in the areas of regional policy and development. It works with all faculties and departments within the university and serves as a reliable point of access for all stakeholders seeking to work with the university in activities related to regional policy and development.
