The fittest, fastest and strongest firefighters in the country will be determined this weekend as the Marine Institute’s Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre hosts the Newfoundland Regional competition of the 2006 Scott Firefit Championships July 28-29.
The Scott FireFit Championships is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations and is widely recognized as “the toughest two minutes in sports.”
Wearing full self-contained breathing apparatus gear, firefighters compete against the clock to complete five tasks including a stair climb, hose hoist, forcible entry, hose advance and victim rescue.
The SERT Centre will host firefighters from the Toronto Fire Services, Waterloo Fire Department, Conception Bay South Fire Department, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, as well as four teams from the Marine Institute. The participants will compete in team, individual, and team relay categories for byes into the FireFit Championships to be held Sept. 14-17 in Niagara Falls, Ont.
The SERT Centre is one of the premiere fire training facilities in Canada with the capability and equipment to provide aircraft rescue and firefighting, structural, marine and industrial firefighting training. It features a modern training facility with highly-trained and experienced instructors, nationally certified training programs, location and ability to provide customized, site-specific training. The SERT Centre is a joint project of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University and the Stephenville Airport Corporation and operates as a satellite campus of the Marine Institute’s Offshore Safety and Survival Centre.
The media and the general public are invited to attend the competition on July 29 at the Stephenville Dome from 10a.m. – 5 p.m.
