SUBJECT: Sir Wilfred Grenfell College to sign MOU with Irish partners

Grenfell College, Memorial University’s west coast campus, will sign a memorandum of understanding today with a delegation of Irish representatives who are on campus this week.
The MOU will outline in principle the various projects on which the partners are collaborating.
On campus this week are Mr. Tony Niland, manager of external services, Dun Loughaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dr. Jim Devine, director of IADT, and Ms. Anne O'Leary, co-ordinator of the B.A. in Film and Television Production at the National Film School of Ireland.
One of the projects being discussed this week is a Learning Vacation Program, which would see Irish clients recruited in Dun Loughaire coming to Corner Brookand participating in an educational program while enjoying a vacation in Western Newfoundland. Grenfell's Division of Community Education will be the key deliverer of this program on the Newfoundland side.
“There is increased demand globally from tour operators, itinerary planners and learning institutes for both academic and tourism learning vacation programs,” said Dr. John Ashton, principal of Grenfell College.
Community Education has already proven itself as an expert deliverer of programs, such as the Elderhotel program of the 1980s and 1990s, Summer Activity Camps, where almost 500 children were served last summer, and the Peel Summer Academy, which has been held for gifted children since 2003.
The College will also be looking to benefit from the Irish delegation's experience in the development of new programming in film and television production.
Anne O'Leary will visit the Pepsi Centre sound stage and theatre facilities and advise on establishment of programming in Film and Television Production at SWGC. Other possible links might include the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) where courses in film are taught. Areas to be considered include film specialization, practice and theory, design/sets, exchanges for students, staff and faculty and arts management.
“We’re seeking the expertise of these institutions with a view to engaging a consultant to review, report and plan for the implementation of Film Studies at SWGC in consultation with industry representatives,” said Dr. Ashton.
Other areas in which Grenfell will be partnering include the 20th anniversary Ireland tour of the Corner Brook March Hare; a book arts project – the art of binding books – under the guidance of Grenfell visual arts instructor Ms. Marlene MacCallum; an interdisciplinary arts project titled Shorelines, which would build on the partnerships established through the Limestone Barrens project; and a trip to Ireland by a Corner Brook business delegation.
