SUBJECT: Visiting lecturer to examine the Lindisfarne Gospels

Dr. Michelle Brown, a world-renowned expert on early illuminated manuscripts, will give a public lecture on the Lindisfarne Gospels as part of her visit as Memorial’s Henrietta Harvey Distinguished Lecturer on Thursday, March 31. Her lecture is titled The LindisfarneGospels: Society, Spirituality and the Scribe. The lecture, sponsored by the Faculty of Arts, will start at 8 p.m.in room A-1043 of the Arts and AdministrationBuildingon MemorialUniversity’s St. Johnscampus.
The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the world's great artworks and symbols of faith. Made on Holy Islandin the Anglo-Saxon kingdomof Northumbriaduring the early 8th century, it is a portal to an age of transformation - from the world of late Antiquity to that of the Middle Ages. The making of this book was an heroic feat of prayer and patience and its maker was a remarkable technical innovator who used his skills to create a vision of his age that stretched from the Atlantic seaboard, with its Celtic and Germanic societies, to the deserts of Palestine, Syriaand Egypt. The lecture will explore what motivated him and what this beautiful book can tell us of this formative period in western culture.
For the past 18 years Dr. Michelle Brown has been the curator of medieval and illuminated manuscripts at the British Library. She has curated several major
exhibitions, including Heirs of Rome and Painted Labyrinth: the World of the Lindisfarne Gospels and has published, broadcasted and lectured widely on medieval history, art history and manuscript studies. She is also a lay canon and chapter member of St. Paul's Cathedral, London.
