Maclean’smagazine has released its annual ranking of Canadian universities and Memorial University has shown a significant improvement in the reputation category, ranking fifth in highest quality, most innovative and best overall. Memorial stands at fifth out of 11 for the overall ranking of comprehensive universities, the same as last year.

Memorial showed top rankings in the following categories: out of province first- year students (ranked 4), class sizes at the first and second-year level (ranked 1), class sizes at the third-and fourth-year level (ranked 3), operating budget (ranked 4), holdings per student for the library (ranked 1) and expenses for the library (ranked 1).

Dr. Axel Meisen, Memorial’s president, was pleased with this year’s results. “We are building an excellent reputation at Memorial. These rankings are a good indicator of our commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service to our community. This past year we distributed nationally our annual report and research report highlighting our successes, and we were the recipient of another 3M Teaching Award, the fifth time that faculty of Memorial University have been honoured with this award. So we are generating better recognition nationally and internationally.

“We have just recently finished participating in the white paper process on public post-secondary education,” added Dr. Meisen. “The Maclean’s rankings certainly support the notion that we are developing a first-class university at Memorial. With the white paper we are presenting a case for the kind of university that we think is needed if the province and its citizens are to prosper. This process will further enhance our standing as a premier university within the Canadian context.”

The Maclean’s ranking takes a measure of the undergraduate experience at Canada’s public universities. It compares schools in three peer rankings. The comprehensive category in which Memorial is ranked includes universities with a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degrees.
