For the first time in its history the Memorial University Alumni Association is planning a special concept tour of England and France. Up to 40 alumni and friends of Memorial will fly to Europe this summer to explore the history and connections of those countries to Newfoundland and Labrador—including a special visit to Beaumont Hamel on July 1 to join in the memorial service.
Dubbed “Path of the Caribou” this 13-day tour is the brainchild of Nath Sheppard. As a graduate of Memorial’s faculty of education, this retired teacher has escorted student and other tour groups across Canada and throughout Europe. Sheppard, with his experience as a tour escort, has built a flare for developing tours that are both enjoyable and relaxing.
“This is meant to be a leisurely tour that will give people a chance to really experience the culture in those places where our ancestors originated,” Mr. Sheppard said. “Each day is carefully planned and each night we’ll stay in upscale hotels right in the middle of the cities and towns we’re visiting.” Local professional guides for each location will be on hand for each day from June 28 to July 10, 2005.
Tour highlights include sightseeing in Paris, and guided visits to the abbey at Mont St. Michel, the Gothic cathedral at Chartres, the garden and palace at Versailles.
Also in France the tour will stop at Beaumont Hamel Historic Park; the Memorial Museum for Peace in Caen; the landing Beaches at Normandy; the Canadian War Cemetery and the Canadian National Vimy Ridge Memorial.
On the other side of the English Channel local guides will lead sight seeing in London. There are also walking tours with local guides at Oxford and Harlow, at Bath’s Roman relics and at Stonehenge.
