Memorial’s Department of Political Science will sponsor a lecture, titled Observing the Orange Revolution: Ukraine's Election of 26 December 2004, on Monday, Feb. 21. The lecture will start at 7:30 p.m.in the Arts and Administration Building, room AA-1045. Free parking is available in Lot15, across from the School of Music. Guest speakers for the lecture will be Jeff Mackey and Bob Winsor, both official Canadian observers of the election; Ross Reid, deputy minister to the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador; and Derek Butler, chief executive officer of the Association of Seafood Producers (ASP). The lecture will examine the electoral process in Ukraine and give some background on the political climate.
Derek Butler
Prior to working with the ASP, Mr. Butler worked overseas in the political development field, serving as resident director of a Washington-based NGO (the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs) in Madagascar, Yemen and Morocco, with shorter stints in Burundi, Togo, Benin and Senegal. He holds both a bachelor of arts (1988) and master of arts (2002) from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Ross Reid
Ross Reid is the deputy minister to the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. A former member of parliament and minister in the government of Canada, he has been involved in Canadian politics since 1975. From 1994 to 2003, Mr. Reid served with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Ghana and Ukraine, and has advised on and conducted democratic development programs in more than 25 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. He is a founding board member of the Institute for Media Policy and Civil Society (IMPACS) and Vote Out Loud.
Bob Winsor
Bob Winsor is a political science student at Memorial University and has been a returning officer with Elections Canada for the federal riding of St. John's South-Mount Pearl since Nov. 2003.
Jeff Mackey
Jeff Mackey is a graduate of the political science program at Memorial and has been active in Newfoundland politics for the past five years. He is currently employed as a public relations official with Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal opposition leader Roger Grimes and is completing a master's degree in political science at Memorial. As a volunteer with the United Nations Association in Canada, Mr. Mackey serves on the national board of directors and actively participates in Model United Nations programs throughout North America.
