Memorial University presents the next lecture in the Music, Media, and Culture series featuring distinguished Finnish ethnomusicologist, Dr. Pirkko Moisala. Her lecture is titled Meetings in Kaija Saariaho’s Music and will take place on Nov. 1, at 4:30 p.m. The lecture will be held in room 2025, School of Music, on Memorial’s St. John’scampus. The subject, Kaija Saariaho, is a leading contemporary Finnish composer who has been described as the new Sibelius. The 2000 premiere of her opera L’amour de Loin in Salzburggarnered enormous international acclaim.
Dr. Moisala is a professor of musicology from Åbo Akademi Universityand the director of the Sibilius Museum in Turku, Finland. She is the author of eight books, including a text on women composers in Europe, an introductory volume on qualitative methodology in music research, and a musical ethnography of the Gurung people of Nepal. She co-edited Music and Gender (University of Illinois Press, 2000) with Dr. Beverley Diamond, Memorial’s Canada Research Chair in Ethnomusicology, with whom she has also collaborated on Saami music research. Her research interests include identity and gender in relation to music, and the ethnomusicological study of Western art music.
