SUBJECT: Conference to examine archaeological developments in northeastern North America

The Department of Archaeology at Memorial University will host a conference titled From the Arctic to Avalon: Transforming the History of Northeastern North America, on Oct. 14, 2004. The conference will be held at the Battery Hotel in St. John’s starting at 9 a.m. This conference will examine a number of archaeological developments in northeastern North Americathat have been influenced by the work of Dr. James Tuck, head of the MUN Archaeology Unit. Speakers will present on important sites from Virginia to the Arctic and Newfoundland and Labrador to Alberta. Presentations will be made on sites of local interest including Ferryland, Signal Hill, L'Anse aux Meadows, Port au Chiox, Bird Cove, St. Pierre et Miquelon and Labrador. Visiting scholars will speak on the archaeology of Iroquoia, English colonies in the Chesapeake Bay area, the Basque in the St.Lawrence and additional sites in New England, Peru, the Arctic and the Great Lakes.
