SUBJECT: Art educator to give public presentation at Memorial and exhibition at local gallery

Dr. Kathy Browning, art educator in the Faculty of Education, Memorial University, will be making a public presentation on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004. Dr. Browning’s lecture is part of the Women’s Studies Speaker Series Program. Her presentation – titled Spirit of the North – will take place from 12-1 p.m. in the Sally Davis Seminar Room (room SN-4087), located in the Science Building on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. All are welcome to attend.
In addition, an exhibition of Dr. Browning’s work – titled Spirit Rocks – will be on display at the Rogue Gallery, 72 Harbour Drive in St. John’s, from Oct. 25 to Nov. 12, 2004. There will be an opening reception held at the gallery on Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 5-7 p.m. All are welcome to attend. This is Dr. Browning’s first one-person art show and artist talk in St. John's.
“Growing up in Thunder Bay has been a source of creative inspiration for me and has guided my artistic path,” Dr. Browning noted. “My spiritual relationship to the land and the lake has encouraged me to take photographs of particular sites over the past thirty years. I have studied these spiritual sites with a variety of photographic media and I have now recorded them digitally. By continuously returning to these sites I have been able to come to terms with the spirit that is inherent in each. These twenty photographs and five musical instruments capture spirits that are embedded in the sites themselves. The Ojibway legend of the Great Spirit Nanabijou affected me at a young age as did the respect for the land and the lake. The rock, water, trees, and your relationship to these is an experience that needs to be unpacked through time. This understanding has inspired me in the past to create sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, musical instruments, performance art, and photography. I am the medium through which the message of the spirit of the land and the lake have been translated.”
