SUBJECT: Wildfire team set to move across the country

After winning the awards for Best Prototype, Best Business Plan, and Best Overall Project, a team of eight students who call themselves Wildfire will leave St. John’stoday with an invitation to the RBC/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup to be held in Torontoin October.
For the past four weeks some of the country’s top high school students have been at Memorial participating in the Shad Valley program. As part of the program, student teams developed prototypes for new technologies that would assist in emergency preparedness and response.
From the project showcase that was hosted yesterday, Wildfire’s floating spine board was selected as the most promising project and will now move on to the national competition. Wildfire hopes that their floating spine board will make water rescues easier for emergency workers who will now be able to focus on the victim. More than 500 people will attend the national competition and the exposure helps position the new products to be the next big business idea.
The Shad Valley program incorporates entrepreneurship with engineering, information and communication technologies, mathematics, science and other disciplines that may be unique to a particular campus. Over the past 24 years, the program has proven to be a life-changing experience for senior high school students interested in pushing their intellectual and creative capacity to the limit. Shad is industry-driven with over 200 companies and organizations supporting the program. Shad Memorial is co-ordinated by the P.J. Gardiner Institute for Enterpriseand Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Business Administration.
