SUBJECT: Housing and food director receives national recognition

Memorial University’s director of Housing, Food and Conference Services, Dr. Brian Johnston, has been recognized with the highest honor bestowed by the Canadian Collegeand University Food Services Association (CCUFSA). Dr. Johnston was presented with the Gord G. Mann Distinguished Service Award at the CCUFSA annual conference held July 3, in Whistler, BC.
The national award means a lot to Dr. Johnston. “I was thrilled to be recognized by my peers in this way,” he said. “Over the last 25 years I have been actively involved in the development of the CCUFSA. And it certainly says something that I've met all the criteria, in one way or another, to actually receive the award.”
Dr. Johnston was nominated by Christine Burke, assistant director of Housing, Food and Conference Services at Memorial and was judged on the following criteria: contributions to the CCUFSA; length of service in college/university food service; contributions to formal education programs, vocational programs; special contributions, inventions, designs, development of innovation food facilities and/or dining programs; contribution to allied food industries; contributions for the advancement of college/university food services – career development of personnel; honors received.
Dr. Johnston attributes much of his successes to Memorial students. He says they are the ones who primarily pay for the service, so they are the ones who should have the greatest amount of input, from the nature of the program operated to who the contractors will be. “While this award recognizes my own personal contribution it also recognizes significantly that Memorial has a good food service and is a very progressive school.
