Direct Admission

The ONAE department encourages applications for direct admission to the Bachelor of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering (ONAE) program.

All applicants must be eligible for admission to the University in a category as defined in the Calendar section UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS - Admission/Readmission to the University (Undergraduate), Categories of Applicants, Admission Criteria and Other Information.

In addition to meeting the regulations and deadlines as defined in the Admission Requirements into the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, direct applicants to the Bachelor of ONAE program must meet additional requirements and deadlines as indicated below:

For high school students:

  • Applicants must provide a one-page statement of interest in the ONAE program.
  • The statement of interest must be submitted to ONAE at ONAEadmissions@mun.ca as soon as possible but by July 1st at the latest. Note that applications to the Faculty of Engineering must be received by March 1st.
  • Decisions will be based on the statement of interest and academic grades.
  • The Department will notify each applicant in writing regarding their direct admission decision as quickly as possible after all relevant information is available.
  • Successful applicants will be admitted to Engineering One and subsequently directly admitted to ONAE in Term 3 subject to meeting the criteria of the minimum requirements for promotion to Academic Term 3. They will not be placed in the competition for the allocation of majors.

For Engineering One students in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, or students from other programs at Memorial University:

  • Applicants must provide a one-page statement of interest in the ONAE program.
  • The statement of interest must be submitted to ONAEadmissions@mun.ca as soon as possible but by July 1st at the latest. Note that deadlines for applications to the Faculty of Engineering are Fall – Mar. 1st, Winter – Oct. 1st and Spring – Feb. 1st.
  • Decisions will be based on the statement of interest and academic grades.
  • The Department will notify each applicant in writing regarding a direct admission decision to the ONAE program as quickly as possible after all relevant information is available.
  • Successful applicants will be admitted to Engineering One and subsequently directly admitted to ONAE in Term 3 subject to meeting the criteria of the minimum requirements for promotion to Academic Term 3. They will not be placed in the competition for the allocation of majors.

Transfer students from recognized post-secondary institutions:

  • Applicants must provide a one-page statement of interest in the ONAE program.
  • The statement of interest must be submitted to ONAE at ONAEadmissions@mun.ca by March 1st at the latest. Note that applications to the Faculty of Engineering must be received by March 1st.
  • Decisions will be based on the statement of interest and academic grades.
  • The Department will notify each applicant in writing regarding a direct admission decision to the ONAE program as quickly as possible after all relevant information is available.
  • Successful applicants will be admitted to Engineering One and subsequently directly admitted to ONAE in Term 3 subject to meeting the criteria of the minimum requirements for promotion to Academic Term 3. They will not be placed in the competition for the allocation of majors.
  • Applicants with advanced credits from recognized, accredited engineering programs will be considered on a case by case basis. Where merited, consideration will be given to establishing a customized program of studies as a transition into Academic Term 3. This program of studies will be determined on an individual basis following transfer credit evaluation. A transfer applicant must complete a majority of the credit hours in the program at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
