Pharmacists to receive CE credit for upcoming event

The School of Pharmacy’s upcoming Pharmacy Matters series is intended to involve their stakeholder groups in an ongoing discussion about the development of Memorial University’s entry-to-practice Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

The first in the series is intended for practicing pharmacists, who will receive one Continuing Education (CE) credit through the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board (NLPB) for attending.

The event will feature a one-hour presentation by Dr. Lisa Bishop, program director, followed by a question and answer period. Pharmacists who cannot attend in person can participate online, as the event will be webcast on www.mun.ca/pharmacy. Questions can be submitted via Twitter and Facebook, using the hashtag #MUNPharmD.

The session will discuss the planned change from the current Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy) program to the PharmD program. The change is in response to a Canada-wide recognition for the need of an advanced degree that will produce practice-ready pharmacists who are prepared for the profession’s expanding scope of practice.

The enhanced knowledge and skills expected of graduating pharmacists will be highlighted, as well as the impact the new program will have on the pharmacy community. Opportunities for pharmacists to adapt to the expanded scope of practice will also be addressed.

At the event’s conclusion, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Understand the status of curricular change in Canadian pharmacy programs,
  • Differentiate between the baccalaureate and doctoral degree,
  • Describe the knowledge and skills required of pharmacy graduates in response to the evolving practice of pharmacy across the country,
  • Explore the benefits and impact of PharmD training on the pharmacy community,
  • Discuss the educational options for adapting to the expanded scope of practice.

This event takes place on Tuesday, September 9 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., in the Health Sciences Centre Main Auditorium.

A live webcast can be viewed at www.mun.ca/pharmacy, and questions can be submitted via Twitter (@schoolofpharm) or Facebook (facebook.com/schoolofpharmacy) by using the hashtag #MUNPharmD.

Questions and comments may also be submitted to Dr. Lisa Bishop at ldbishop@mun.ca.
