Alumni series: Lorie Carter

Here in the School of Pharmacy, we want to celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni. So we’re presenting a series of alumni snapshots to celebrate not only the capabilities of our graduates, who are medication therapy experts, critical thinkers, inter-professional collaborators, effective communicators, problem solvers, leaders and innovators, but we’re also celebrating the breadth and depth of career choices a degree in pharmacy can bring. From community or hospital pharmacists, to a career in research and academia, government, pharmaceutical industry and beyond, our graduates are making waves throughout the profession and in the healthcare industry.

Lorie Carter - challenging fun

Lorie Carter (Class of 2006) loves solving problems. Whether they’re related to medications or her new son Jace, investigating to get all the information and options to find a solution that helps the patient is “rewarding and energizing,” in her words.

“Both in community and hospital, pharmacists are now being trained and are capable of doing more clinically than ever before. It’s very motivating and encouraging, and it’s an exciting time in our profession.” The Mount Pearl native began her career in Sylvan Lake, Alberta at a community pharmacy, where she worked in long-term care, anticoagulation management, and provided patient consultations at multiple family physician offices as part of their Primary Care Network.

From Sylvan Lake, she moved to Edmonton to complete a hospital pharmacy residency with the University of Alberta Hospital in 2012, and after moving back to Newfoundland she worked for one year at the Burin Hospital before moving to St. John’s in 2013.

“I have a clinical practice in internal medicine and respirology with Eastern Health at the Health Sciences Centre. Collaboration amongst primary health care providers is so important if we want to improve our healthcare system and our patients’ quality of life.”
