SUBJECT: Student entrepreneurs to compete for $25,000 at 2020 Mel Woodward Cup

DATE: June 15, 2020

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) will host a virtual startup competition that invests $40,000 in Memorial University student entrepreneurs on Tuesday, June 16.

The 2020 Mel Woodward Cup awards a top prize of $25,000 and a runner-up prize of $15,000 to the most innovative and high-potential student-led startups at Memorial. The top two teams also receive in-kind prizes related to legal, marketing, tax and professional development services from Genesis, KMPG, Altitude Media, Gardiner Centre, Perfect Day, McInnes Cooper and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI).

This year, for the first time in its history, the competition will be held virtually due to restrictions arising from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the fourth iteration of the Mel Woodward Cup.
The event will be held from 3-5 p.m. Pitch videos from five finalist teams will be aired and finalists will answer questions from a panel of judges live during the stream. The winning teams will be announced at 4:55 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend and may register here.

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship, based at St. John’s Campus, aims to inspire and support aspiring entrepreneurs at Memorial by offering foundational training, guidance and access to funding and connections to create high-growth businesses.

The Mel Woodward Cup was created through a donation to the Faculty of Business Administration from the family of the late Dr. Mel Woodward, a well-known entrepreneur who founded the Woodward Group of Companies, in 2017. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) also provides support for the competition.
