SUBJECT: Marine Institute hosts 2019 N.L. Regional MATE ROV Competition from May 2-4

Thirty-three teams from junior high schools and high schools across Newfoundland and Labrador will compete in the 2019 N.L. Regional Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition from May 2-4 at the Marine Institute campus at 155 Ridge Rd.
 
Each team has designed and built an ROV that they will pilot in the Marine Institute’s flume tank to complete a list of underwater tasks. The tasks include inspecting and repairing a hydroelectric dam, monitoring water quality, determining habitat diversity, restoring fish habitat and recovering a 19th-century cannon and identifying the location of the cannon shells.
 
Below are the schedules for the junior high school (SCOUT class) and high school (RANGER class) competitions:

Friday, May 3

  • 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.: SCOUT competition and presentation of awards
  • 6:30 p.m.: RANGER competition opening ceremony and practice sessions

Saturday, May 4

  • 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: RANGER competition
  • 5-7 p.m.: Ranger awards and closing 

The Newfoundland and Labrador MATE competition is part of a network of 30 regional events worldwide. The top two teams from the RANGER competition will earn the opportunity to participate in the 2019 MATE International ROVcompetition from June 20-22 in Kingsport, Tenn.
