SUBJECT: Memorial University heading to SpaceX hyperloop competition

DATE: August 15, 2017

The future of transportation will be on display when students and recent graduates from Memorial University travel to Los Angeles for the SpaceX hyperloop competition, sponsored by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Paradigm Hyperloop is an international team of students from Memorial, Northeastern University in Boston and the College of the North Atlantic who have come together to make the hyperloop concept a reality. The team aims to prove the viability of air-based levitation for use in high-speed applications by building a prototype Hyperloop pod capable of reaching 200 m.p.h.

Memorial is the only Canadian university represented at the competition.

The SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition is an open challenge to student teams across the globe to design and build hyperloop test vehicles. Teams compete for the ultimate prize of performing a high-speed run in the SpaceX HyperTube, in Hawthorne, California. The competition is set for Aug. 25-27. The team leaves St. John’s for Los Angeles on Friday, Aug. 18.

Media availability with members of the Paradigm Hyperloop team will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. in the mechanical engineering lab (EN-1020) in the Engineering Building, Memorial’s St. John’s campus.
