SUBJECT: Symposium on Newfoundland and Labrador's role in the First World War

The Newfoundland Historical Society, with support from Memorial’s WWI00 Commemorations Program, is holding a three-day symposium on Newfoundland and Labrador’s involvement in The First World War Oct. 2-4.
“The First World War has been described as a watershed in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history,” said Dr. Terry Bishop-Sterling, head, Department of History, and the symposium’s co-chair. “A century later Newfoundlanders and Labradorians remain fascinated by the war and our country’s involvement in an international event.”
Professor Bishop-Sterling and her colleagues have brought together local, national and international experts to provide a snapshot of the start of the war, the British Empire and its allies in 1914 and Newfoundland’s response and mobilization for war.
Speakers include John Keiger, Edward Roberts, Bert Riggs, Dean Oliver, Shannon Lewis Simpson, David Mercer, Robin McGrath, Andrew Robertshaw and Department of History faculty members Terry Bishop-Sterling, Sean Cadigan and Mike O’Brien.

The event will conclude with a banquet at the Signal Hill Interpretation Centre that will include readings from First World War letters and music by Allan Bryne.
