News Release

REF NO.: 49

SUBJECT: Celebrating the university experience during MUNdays 2014

DATE: October 16, 2014

Memorial University will kick up its collective heels during its annual week-long fall celebrations, MUNdays, next week.

From Oct. 23-28 on the St. John’s and Marine Institute campuses and Oct. 24-29 at Grenfell Campus, there will be fun galore, whether it’s getting stuffed at the syrupy Pancake Breakfast, singing along with the all-star lineup at the Super TSC Night Concert, taking on all comers in a glow-in-the-dark race, getting a serious sugar rush at a candy buffet or sailing away on the west coast’s beautiful Bonne Bay.

A full itinerary of events and activities is planned, encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to come together and celebrate spirit at Memorial.

Be sure to follow along in the fun on the MUNdays Twitter feed @ilovemundays with the #MUNdays2014 hashtag and the Facebook page at I Love MUNdays.

MUNdays highlights the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that set Memorial apart from all other post-secondary education institutions.

St. John’s campus

Stack ’em high! The six-day schedule of events kicks off in St. John’s on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 7:30-9:15 a.m. with a campus-wide Pancake Breakfast. Tasty breakfast treats will be served up at the Main Dining Hall, Paton College!

Once everyone is full, the Official Launch of MUNdays will happen at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Spirit Parade at 9:30 a.m. A boisterous parade will leave the Main Dining Hall and march around campus, waving flags and hooting and hollering to represent houses, clubs, societies or faculties or to just loudly show spirit!

Will longstanding Spirit Parade champions, the Pakistani Student Association, take top honours again this year?

Friday, Oct. 24, is Kindness Friday because it feels good! The location is anywhere and everywhere and the concept is simple: students, staff, faculty, alumni and retirees are invited to show their kindness to and appreciation of one another, the community or the environment. Give a cookie. Donate clothing. Pick up litter. The sky’s the limit!

Also on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the campus-wide Kindness Friday initiative, Fill-the-Square, takes place! We’ll watch the basketball court at Paton College disappear as non-perishable food items flood in to benefit the Campus Food Bank. Full bellies make for happy hearts!

During the afternoon and evening, Friday, Oct. 24, many class and faculty reunions take place. From on-campus locations to some of the capital city’s most inviting pubs and clubs, hundreds of Memorial alumni will gather to reconnect and reflect on their university years together.

The Sea-Hawks men's volleyball teams will compete against teams from the Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ) and the Atlantic University Sport conferences in an interlock tournament to kick off the 2014-15 volleyball season Friday, Oct. 24. Memorial takes on the University of Sherbrooke at 8 p.m. Fans will wear red and support their home team! Go Sea-Hawks!

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the volleyball competition continues as the men’s Sea-Hawks take to the court at the Field House. Memorial will play Laval University at 1 p.m. and the University of Montreal at 8 p.m. Red means go!

All day long on Saturday, Oct. 25, the Community Service Learning event will take place at various locations. It’s our chance to give back to the world, and there are options. Collect clothes for a women’s shelter. Plant seedlings in a local waste space. Play a few hands of cards at a senior’s home. Do some good and feel good!

Also on Saturday, Oct. 25, the Barnes House Charity Truck Pull is back! After a brief hiatus, this massive feat of strength happens from 12-5 p.m. in lot 16/16A. This MUNdays crowd pleaser raises money and awareness for Iris Kirby House.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, a party is goin’ on! It’ll be a rockin’ good time at The Breezeway bar in the University Centre as hundreds of alumni rock out at the Super TSC Night Concert. Memories of former concerts and parties held in the revered Thomson Student Centre (TSC) will be relived and inspire dancing into the wee hours. Hosted by up-and-coming local comedian Matt Wright, the concert features an all-star lineup with performances by Mick Davis, Barry Canning, and Shanneyganock. Alumni and friends are all invited!

Memorial’s first ever MUNdays Sunday Skate takes place on Sunday, Oct. 26. Alumni, students, faculty and staff, and friends of the university, along with their families, will lace up their skates and head down to the Jack Byrne Arena from 4-5 p.m. for an hour of skating followed by refreshments and munchies. Get out on the ice and get your heart pumping!

Also on Sunday, Oct 26, the President’s Golden Celebration will see Dr. Gary Kachanoski host a special celebration recognizing alumni celebrating 50 years of graduation from the Parade Street and Elizabeth Avenue campuses.

On Monday, Oct. 27, it’s MUNday, all day! University pride will be literally worn on sleeves with everyone donning MUN-branded hoodies, tees, sweatpants and scarves.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is also on Monday, Oct. 27, from 1-3:30 p.m. at The Landing, University Centre. Graduate students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. The condensed time frame challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be communicated to general audiences. The top three competitors will take home some great prizes – the winner nabs $500 and moves on to the eastern regional leg of this prestigious international competition! Watch, learn and root for your favourite researcher.

From 6-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, in The Landing, University Centre, A Menu for Success: Dining Etiquette in the Professional World will answer burning etiquette questions such as: Why are there so many forks? Whose bread plate is that? You'll get answers to these queries and many more.

Tuesday, Oct. 28, is the last day of MUNdays for 2014. No worries, though, there’ll be so much to do, it’ll keep everyone warm and fuzzy until next year. The university-wide Health Challenge will have the Field House hopping from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. as the university community gets its feet moving to break its record of laps around the track again this year. In 2013, the final tally came in at 5,424 laps, which shattered the 2012 record of 4,775. Prizes will be given out for top effort!

Also on Tuesday, Oct. 28, the University Centre (UC) food court will be the location for the UC Lounge. Comfy couches, live tunes by local DJs and funky prizes will create a groovy atmosphere. The UC Lounge takes place 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

MUNdays 2014 comes to an end on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. in the University Centre. The Official Closing Ceremonies will be where we say goodbye to Memorial’s fun-filled spirit week for another year. Revealing the winners of the week-long Spirit Award Challenge (worth $1,000!) and the Instagram Photo Challenge (a total of $1,700 is up for grabs!) will help ease the pain.

Happy MUNdays, everyone!
