SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold vigil honouring women of l’École Polytechnique

Students, faculty and staff will pause and reflect during a special ceremony on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus Thursday, Dec. 6.
Each year, the university commemorates the tragic anniversary of 1989’s Montreal Massacre. Fourteen women were killed because of their gender at l’École Polytechnique in Montreal, Que. The anniversary coincides with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.
This year’s vigil will reflect upon “action” -- the kind of action needed by all members of the community in order to prevent, reduce and eliminate violence against women in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This year is the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy. The vigil will be held in EN-2006 in the Engineering (S.J. Carew) building. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a small reception in the main foyer. Free parking is available in lots marked 16 and 16A.
This year’s event will include a candlelight procession of 14 Memorial students who will each represent the lives of the women who were lost. Dr. Jennifer Connor, Faculty of Medicine, will emcee the event.
Prof. Andy Fisher, associate dean of undergraduate studies, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, will speak and guest speaker Linda Ross, president and chief executive officer, Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, will give a keynote address.
Dedications will be offered by students, faculty, staff and community organizations with performances by the SUNCOR Quartet, a string quartet comprised of students from the School of Music master’s of music program.
Representatives from community organizations from across the city have been invited to attend and to set up booths and/or displays highlighting their work toward ending violence against women.
The vigil is organized annually by Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office and the Department of Gender Studies.
