SUBJECT: Marine Institute to host Holyrood Marine Base Open House

The Marine Institute (MI) will host its fourth annual community open house at its Holyrood Marine Base on Friday, July 19, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. as part of the Town of Holyroods Squid Festival.
Members of the media and general public are invited to attend this celebration.
The open house will give visitors a chance to learn more about the Marine Institutes training and research activities at the Holyrood Marine Base. Visitors will also be able to experience the centres interactive exhibits and displays during the day including:
Explorer autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)
Canadian Coast Guard Oil Spill Response
MI Ocean Mapping
Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium
White Cap Scientific Corporation
Eastern Edge Robotics
Ground Search and Rescue
MIs Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development
MIs Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research
MIs Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec)
MI Student Recruitment
During the open house, MI Ocean Net will also conduct a cleanup of the Holyrood beach and coastal areas. Visitors to the open house are encouraged to join the cleanup, and will be provided with gloves and garbage bags if they wish to participate.
The open house starts at 10 a.m. with demonstrations, with the MI Ocean Net beach cleanup running from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
From 12-2 p.m. there will be a free barbecue, with further demonstrations and ocean-related activities taking place between 1-3 p.m. There will also be face painting, a balloon artist and an appearance by Miss Newfoundland and Labrador Chelsea Ash.
