SUBJECT: Discovery Days in Health Sciences to take place at Memorial University

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame TD Discovery Days in Health Sciences will take place Wednesday, May 29, at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University. A total of 97 high school students and teachers from 17 schools will attend this annual event.
The day starts off at 9:30 a.m. in the main auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre with a keynote address by Dr. Natalie Bridger, pediatric infectious diseases specialist and clinical chief of infection prevention and control with Eastern Health. Her talk is titled Holy Heart to Haiti…With a Few Stops in Between. Dr. Bridger joined Team Broken Earth in 2012 and has completed four missions in Haiti since that time.
During Discovery Days in Health Sciences, students will participate in a variety of hands-on workshops. Students will have the opportunity to compound and dispense a lip balm in the School of Pharmacy. In the Faculty of Medicine, there will be an open discussion to reveal how organ donation and organ/tissue transplantation is managed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In a workshop on microorganisms in human disease, students will be introduced to a variety of bacteria, parasites and fungi.
Other workshops will involve using an electron microscope to look inside a cell, trying out techniques used daily in a histology/pathology laboratory, and learning how computer-driven patient simulators are used in medical education. Students will also participate in a workshop about advances in computer technology that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer with radiation therapy.
The day’s activities will also include opportunities to participate in workshops about DNA, using nanotechnology to improve cancer therapy, tissue transplantation and respiratory therapy.
Discovery Days in Health Sciences will wrap up from 2:45-3:30 p.m. with a panel discussion titled Health Pros Tell All.
