SUBJECT: Canada’s premier oceans conference to take place in St. John’s

The 10th annual Ocean Innovation Conference and Exhibition (OI-12) will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, from Oct. 21-24. Canada’s premier oceans event, OI-12 has attracted significant national and international interest from a range of maritime market segments.
For its 10th year, the OI conference will bring together internationally recognized researchers, regulators, policy makers and innovators to explore state of the art training, knowledge and equipment for safety and survival in extreme ocean environments. For this event, Ocean Innovation has partnered with the International Association for Safety and Survival Training (IASST) to bring practical, hands-on experience to the conference.
This year marks 100 years since the loss of the Titanic; 70 years since the sinking of the Caribou, as well as the USS Truxton and USS Pollux; 30 years since the loss of the Ocean Ranger; and three years since the Cougar 491 tragedy off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Predated by the anniversaries of these unfortunate events, Ocean Innovation 2012 is being organized as a mechanism to bring together a global community of interest in offshore safety and survival to reflect on advances and innovations – past, present and future. This year also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Coast Guard, an irreplaceable group of men and women who play an instrumental role in ensuring the safety of mariners in Canadian waters.
This year’s event will see participation from six continents of safety and survival experts, ranging from representatives from ASKSafety AS Norway to the Swedish Rescue Society, who have committed to come together to celebrate, broadcast and discuss innovations in the training, knowledge and equipment that has developed and continues to develop in our offshore safety and survival community.
This year’s keynote addresses include Rear-Admiral David Gardam, commander, Joint Task Force Atlantic and Maritime Force Atlantic, Canadian Navy; Robert Wells, commissioner, Offshore Helicopter Safety Inquiry; and Max Ruelokke, chair, Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
The Ocean Innovation 2012 agenda will ensure that a wide range of issues related to extreme survival are fully explored, focusing on three sub-themes -- innovations in training, knowledge and equipment. In all, some 25 presenters from around the world will address delegates.
More than 200 representatives from government, industry, academe and regulatory bodies will come together at Ocean Innovation 2012 to discuss the various facets and positions as they relate to survival in an ocean environment.
A parallel trade show will also take place with more than 20 exhibitors in the industry. In addition to regularly scheduled presentations and keynotes, Mr. Ruelokke will present a public lecture on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 2-4 p.m. at The Sheraton Hotel in salons Garrison and Signal. Held in conjunction with the City of St. John’s 2012 Ocean Week, this event is free of charge and open to the public. Mr. Ruelokke’s talk, titled From the Ocean Ranger to Cougar 491: My Personal Journey Through Extreme Events, will provide a captivating and personal look into the tragedies that have shaped and improved training, knowledge and equipment within the extreme survival of ocean industries.
