SUBJECT: PSA: Renowned linguist to give lecture on language death on Memorial Universitys St. Johns campus

Half the languages of the world will die out within the next century. Renowned linguist Dr. David Crystal who will receive an honorary degree at Memorials fall 2011 convocation ceremonies reviews the way languages are dying, asks why, and then asks what can be done. He presents the arguments around why people should be concerned, drawing a parallel with other ecological domains.
This talk will be of particular interest to those interested in Newfoundland English and Aboriginal languages.
The lecture is open to all and begins at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, in room SN-2098 of the Science building.
