SUBJECT: Memorial University cranks up the spirit at annual fall celebrations

Note to editors:
From Oct. 20-25, Memorial University will hold MUNdays, its yearly fall celebrations. At Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook, festivities run Oct. 18-22.
Media representatives are invited to attend the official launch on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the Arts and Science Building at 11:30 a.m. in Corner Brook and on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 9:15 a.m. in the main dining hall on the St. John’s campus.
On the St. John’s campus, events fall under the banner of I Love MUNdays. I Fell for Grenfell takes place on the university’s west coast campus. I Love MI MUNdays take place at the Marine Institute in St. John’s.
Events range from a fierce dance-off by residence house mascots to a colourful spirit parade to a Guinness World Record attempt.
MUNdays highlights the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that distinguish Memorial as one of the best post-secondary institutions in the world.
A full slate of events and activities are planned, encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to come together and celebrate Memorial.

In St. John’s:
•I Love MUNdays launch
Thursday, Oct. 20, 9:15 a.m., St. John’s, main dining hall.
Join students, faculty and staff for a rowdy kick-off to this year’s activities.
 
•Spirit Parade
Thursday, Oct. 20, 9:30-10 a.m., St. John’s, starts at main dining hall.
Student representatives will march through campus with flags held high with enthusiasm and pride.
 
•Out Move Sammy the Sea-Hawk
Thursday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. Field House, St. John’s
Residence house mascots will try to “out dance” Sammy the Sea-Hawk, Memorial’s mascot.
 
•Fill the Square
Friday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
As part of Kindness Friday, the Memorial University community will attempt to cover the square in Paton College with non-perishable food items, complete with a donation from the Marine Institute arriving in a lifeboat.
 
•Eighth Annual Barnes House Charity Truck Pull
Sunday, Oct. 23, 2 p.m., St. John’s campus, parking lot 16
Students and employees will join forces to pull a massive vehicle in record time to help raise money for Iris Kirby House.
 
•International Bazaar
Monday, Oct. 24, 12-3 p.m., St. John’s, The Landing, University Centre, Room 3018
Taste your way around the world. This year’s bazaar will include a marketplace of world music, tastes, sights and sounds.
 
•Rant Like Rick finals
Monday, Oct. 24, 3:30-5 p.m., St. John’s, The Landing, University Centre, Room 3018
Memorial crowns its best loudmouth.                                                                  
 
•Guinness World Record attempt
Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1-2 p.m.
Students and employees will attempt to set the new Guinness World Record for most people standing on one foot.
 
At the Marine Institute:
• Minute to Win It
Tuesday, Oct. 20, 12 p.m.; Monday, Oct. 24, 12 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 25, 8:30 a.m. St. John’s, MI Main Lobby
Students compete in high energy 60 second challenges. MUN Sea-Hawks will host on Oct. 20.
 
• MI Idol
Thursday, Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m., St. John’s, MI Student Lounge
Students belt out tunes to the best selection of YouTube karaoke songs around.
 
In Corner Brook:
• I Fell for Grenfell launch

• Pie the Prof
Thursday, Oct. 20, 1-3 p.m., GCSU food court, Arts and Science building, Corner Brook
Watch professors get pie-ed to raise money for the John Ashton Bursary Fund and the campus food bank.
 
• Teddy Bear Clinic and Art Session
Saturday, Oct. 22, 1:30-3 p.m., Fine Arts atrium, Corner Brook
Students from the Western Regional School of Nursing give Teddy his checkup. Games, prizes, loot bags and fun.
