SUBJECT: Irish language teaching assistant offers workshops in time for St. Patrick’s Day

Memorial University’s Faculty of Arts’ Irish language teaching assistant will offer three Irish-themed workshops through the Division of Lifelong Learning leading up to and after St. Patrick’s Day on March 17.
“These workshops are for those with an interest in the Irish language that want to expose themselves to it in a cultural setting – and have a bit of craic,” said Muireann Ni Chíobháin, a native of Cork and a graduate of University College Cork and National University of Ireland Galway.
“It’s a way of introducing people to the language. They aren’t necessarily for language learners – although those that know some Irish are of course more than welcome.”
The sessions will focus on Irish dancing, Irish nicknames, Irish sayings and proverbs and Irish music. Ms. Ni Chíobháin’s intention is to highlight the Irish Newfoundland connection throughout the workshops.
“Nicknames for example, are big in both Ireland and Newfoundland. People are always enthralled to learn where their name comes from,” she said.
The workshop on Irish phrases and sayings focuses on recognizable ayings that have been translated from Irish into English and therefore into everyday language.
The musical component will focus on group ceili dancing and five easily learned Irish songs that can be “easily pulled out to impress your friends at parties.”
According to Ms. Ni Chíobháin, the songs will be learned phonetically and the dancing is appropriate for all ages and skill levels. There are two sections for each workshop – afternoons from 12:30-2 p.m. and evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. For more information and to register visit http://bit.ly/A54z9H.
