The Memorial University community garden team is eager to start another growing season and will be kicking off the year with its first workshop of the year.   

The session is being presented in partnership with Food Education Action St. John’s (FEASt) and will cover the absolute basics – from seed selection to what to plant first. The workshop will take place in Queen’s College, room 4028, on Sunday, May 6, from 2-4 p.m. All members of the public are invited to attend the workshop. It is free, but the community garden team does ask that all interested attendees RSVP to communitygarden@mun.ca.

The beginners’ workshop is being offered in response to feedback from last season; along with some seasoned gardening veterans, the community garden has been very successful in attracting the interest of new gardeners.                      

“We’ve got a range of experience levels this year, which is a good thing,” said Toby Rowe, Memorial’s sustainability co-ordinator. “Along with producing fresh food, the community garden is a learning experience.”

The garden is open to all current Memorial students, faculty and staff, as well as retired faculty and staff, and is located directly behind Queen’s College. All plots have been allocated for this growing season.
