SUBJECT: Botanical Garden workshops a sure sign of summer

With weather like ours, MUN Botanical Garden’s garden workshop series may be a more reliable signal that summer is on the way than looking out the window! With two workshops (registrations are now open) and a rhododendron event planned, June will be a busy month in the garden.
“Despite the gray days we’ve had recently, I’m quite optimistic that this will be a better year for gardening than we’ve seen recently,” said Anne Madden, education co-ordinator at the garden. “The workshops that we’re offering in June will give gardeners the information they need to make sure their gardens get off to a great start this year. We’ve also chosen topics that should be of interest to gardeners of varying skill levels and interests.”
On June 9, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., nursery manager, Tim Walsh, will host a session about container gardening. Perfect for apartment dwellers and those interested in adding a bit of interest to their gardens, Tim will explain everything that anyone would need to know about growing in pots, window boxes and hanging baskets.
And for those who aren’t sure whether the sun will make an appearance this year, on June 20, from 7-9 p.m., Todd Boland will host a workshop devoted to the humble fern, a reliable, but often underused, part of the Avalon Peninsula gardener’s arsenal. From sun to shade, ferns are an easy-to-grow, and easy-to-love choice, for just about every garden space.
All workshops are offered and managed by the Botanical Garden. Space is limited. To secure your place, telephone 709-864-7979 (toll free: 1-866-959-8474), or e-mail lifelong.learning@mun.ca.
Along with the workshops, the Garden will also host a special event dedicated to the mighty rhododendron. Held on June 16 and 17, there will be tours and exhibits, along with an educational talk both days at 2 p.m. No registration is needed for this event, and entrance is included in the price of general admission to the garden.
