SUBJECT: PSA: Public discussion on the gender, work and health

The relationship between gender and work and the impact of that relationship on our health will be discussed at a free public event at Memorial University on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
The Café Scientifique event will feature two films that delve into interaction between gender and work and the broader implications for family, community health and well being.
The first film, El Contrato, follows several Mexican men who make an annual migration to southern Ontario for eight months to pick tomatoes. Both the work and accommodation pose health risks and challenges that the workers must negotiate for the economic benefits the employment provides.
The second film, A Second Wind, features a Newfoundland woman contemplating work in a crab processing plant. The same plant led to respiratory problems for her mother, who is concerned about the economic hardship her family may face if her sickness is diagnosed.
The films will be followed by a lively café-style discussion with three expert panelists: Katherine Lippel, Canada Research Chair in occupational health and safety law at the University of Ottawa; Barb Neis, senior research associate with SafetyNet, a Memorial University initiative; and Nicole Power, associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Memorial University.
The event is free to the public and takes place at Bitters Pub in Field Hall at Memorial University.
Café Scientifiques are part of a national program aimed at bringing university research into the wider community.
