SUBJECT: PSA: Johnson GEO CENTRE Public Lecture Series – Occupied St. John’s: Building a War Time Landscape

As part of the festivities celebrating the 50th anniversary of Memorial University’s Department of Geography, the Johnson GEO CENTRE is sponsoring a series of public lectures on the role of geography in all of our lives.
Drs. Chris Sharpe and Jo Shawyer will co-present the next lecture, Occupied St. John’s: Building a War Time Landscape, on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. They plan to present the story of St. John’s at war and will use historic photos and maps to illustrate the talk.
The lecture will focus on how the city coped in 1941 and 1942 when the population of St. John’s grew by over 25 per cent as a result of the arrival of Canadian and American troops. Military camps, gun batteries, ammunition dumps, a new dockyard and a new airport changed the face of the city and hundreds of military buildings were quickly constructed and restricted areas declared.
A giant photo mosaic of the city of St John's circa 1948 will be on display during the lecture. Created by cartographer Charlie Conway, it is comprised of more than 275 individual aerial photos taken by military photographers.
The lecture takes place on Tuesday Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Johnson GEO CENTRE.
