SUBJECT: Project Management Symposium a chance to sharpen skills and share challenges

On Nov. 2, project managers will have an all-day opportunity to learn how project leadership is changing.
The Gardiner Centre at Memorial University and the Project Management Institute of NL (PMI) have partnered to offer the Project Management Symposium 2010, where professional project managers can sharpen their skills, learn from experts, network and hear first-hand accounts of major projects undertaken in the province.
“The symposium provides a chance to showcase projects happening in our community,” explained Jackie Collins, training advisor for the Gardiner Centre. “This gives insight into project management techniques as they are being applied and also as they are challenged.”
This year’s feature project is the massive revamp of the St. John's waste management strategy. Jason Sinyard, manager of the city’ Waste Management Division, will share lessons learned in undertaking projects such as the city’s new recycling program and the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility.
Frank Saladis, world-leading project management expert and past president of the PMI chapter in New York City, will deliver the keynote address. On Nov. 1, he’ll offer a separate workshop, Thinking Positive about Risk Management.
Other experts offering insight at the symposium include Dr. Rob Shea, the interim dean of Student Services at Memorial, who will discuss leadership for a multigenerational workforce, while Dr. Lyle Wetsch, associate professor of marketing at Memorial, will present on how social media can be used to enhance project management collaboration.
This year’s Project Management Symposium is sponsored by xwave and Quality Matters. Those who take part will earn six Professional Development Units (PDUs) toward their certification.
