SUBJECT: New president and vice-chancellor to preside over Grenfell Campus convocation

Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University of Newfoundland, will preside over convocation for the first time at the fall session of convocation at the universitys Grenfell Campus.
Dr. Kachanoski began his term as Memorials new president on July 1, 2010. He will be ceremonially installed as the president and vice-chancellor at a special session of convocation in St. Johns on Oct. 21.
The Grenfell Campus will hold its annual fall convocation ceremony at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre on Friday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m.
Memorial University will confer 53 bachelors degrees in areas such as arts, business administration, fine arts, education, nursing and science, and one master of arts in history. An honorary degree will be awarded to community volunteer Minnie Vallis.
On Thursday, Oct. 7, Grenfells education graduates will participate in the fall 2010 Ceremony of Induction into the Teaching Profession; the ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in the Forest Centre atrium.
Following convocation, Grenfells students at Western Regional School of Nursing will participate in the annual school of nursing awards ceremony in the AV Room of Western Memorial Regional Hospital at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow at Monaghan Hall.
The convocation ceremony will be taped and webcast on Friday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at www.distance.mun.ca/media/files/live. The ceremony will also be aired on Rogers Cable in the weeks ahead and copies of the DVD will be made available for sale at the campus bookstore.
Regular sessions of fall convocation in St. Johns take place on Friday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. A special convocation session will be held on Oct. 21 to install Dr. Gary Kachanoski as Memorials new president and vice-chancellor. During the special convocation featuring the installation of President Kachanoski, honorary degrees will be awarded to Dr. Michael Asch, anthropologist and professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, and Peter MacKinnon, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan and a noted legal scholar. Dr. Pamela Björkman, Max Delbruck Professor of Biology at Caltech, will receive an honorary degree on Friday, Oct. 22.
