SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold Dec. 6 Vigil

Students, faculty and staff will pause and reflect during a special ceremony on Memorial University of Newfoundland’s St. John’s campus Dec. 6.
Every year, the university commemorates the tragic anniversary of 1989’s Montreal Massacre when 14 women were killed because of their gender at l’École Polytechnique in Montreal. The anniversary coincides with the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.
This year, the 21st anniversary of the tragedy, the vigil will be held on Monday, Dec. 6, in EN-2006 in the S. J. Carew (Engineering) Building on Memorial University’s St. John’s Campus. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a small reception in the main lobby. Free parking is available in lots 16 and 16A.
This year’s event will include a candlelight procession of 14 Memorial students who will represent the lives of the women who were lost. Dr. Noreen Golfman, dean of the School of Graduate Studies, will emcee the event.
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Dr. John Quaicoe will speak and MHA and Leader of the provincial NDP Lorraine Michael will give a keynote speech.
As well, dedications will be offered by students, faculty, staff and community organizations, and there will be performances by the Faculty of Music student string quartet, The Beethoven Quartet. Representatives from community organizations from across the city will attend and have been invited to set up booths and/or displays.
The vigil is organized annually by Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office and the Department of Women’s Studies.
