SUBJECT: Grenfell: Orientation 2010 dares students to forge their own paths

Orientation 2010 is taking some lessons from the past year of change for Sir Wilfred Grenfell College as the institution prepares to forge a new and different path into the future.
“Orientation 2010 is call for students to change themselves and the world around them,” said Brad Evoy, one of the co-ordinators of Orientation 2010. “Our campus has had a lot of changes in the past year and continues to change; similarly, new students at Grenfell have the opportunity to set forth a change in their own lives, which begins in Orientation Week. Also, we want new students to feel a part of the community they have now entered into and one which, we hope, they will want to be an active part of for the entire time they’re here.”
One element that will remain the same is the partnership between the Department of Student Services and the Grenfell College Student Union that allows this event to be an annual success.
The theme of Orientation 2010 is “Make this place your own!” University is what you make of it; though it can be overwhelming at first, students can use their time in university to do amazing things.
“Our orientation team has designed a program that will allow students to start finding their own path while helping them dive into the university community,” said Mr. Evoy.
Orientation events – all Red Carpet-themed to shine the spotlight on students – include the ‘Star-Studded’ Welcome Show, the ‘A-List’ Luncheon, campus tours and the brand new Hollywood-themed Dance. This year Ferriss Hodgett Library will offer a returning favourite event from last year, Gaming Night!
Parent Orientation – held on Sunday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 6 in the Fine Arts Theatre from 1-3 p.m. – will encourage parents to build new relationships with other parents and learn about their children’s unique academic surroundings.
Non-traditional Student Orientation (for mature, transfer or part-time students) will be held Thursday, Sept. 2, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the GCSU Student Lounge.
