SUBJECT: Grenfell: Are you ready to fall for Grenfell?

The Grenfell College community is gearing up once again for its annual “I Fell for Grenfell” celebration.
The celebration is part of Memorial University’s “I Love MUNdays festivities”, which takes place Oct. 27-31 this year. These festivities celebrate community, diversity, excellence, ingenuity and kindness on the Corner Brook and St. John’s campuses.
“’I Fell for Grenfell’ is an opportunity for the college’s students, faculty and staff to honour the close sense of community that exists on the Corner Brook campus and in the surrounding area,” said Meaghan Philpott, I Fell for Grenfell co-ordinator. “The community feel on campus extends to the community-at-large, as many of our students, faculty and staff are dynamic contributors in the public sphere. As usual, many of the events are open to the general public.”
One new addition to this week is the concept of ‘I Fell for Greenfell’, which embraces environmental sustainability at Grenfell College by making small individual efforts, said Ms. Philpott.
“We are adding green elements into our regular events with the help of the committed, green-thumbed student and staff,” she said, adding that one entirely green event is Hallo-Green, where students create and model Halloween costumes made from recycled materials.
The official launch of I Fell for Grenfell, complete with cake cutting, is Wednesday, Oct. 28, 4 p.m., in the Grenfell College Student Union Food Court. This is also the site of a barbecue and prize ceremony for the Campus Dash. The Campus Dash is an annual 2 km run or 1 km walk route (this year around the Participark), which promotes healthy living for the Grenfell community and the general public. This year Grenfell students will have an additional opportunity to get active, with the introduction of an obstacle course which will be run simultaneously with the Campus Dash.
Tuesday, Oct. 27:
• Students will be treated to a healthy brown bag breakfast, compliments of Grenfell’s Housing Office.
• The day continues with the start of “I Walk for Grenfell”, a fitness challenge ongoing from Tuesday, Oct. 27 to Friday, Oct. 30, where the Grenfell community counts their laps around the Pepsi Centre indoor track to accumulate the same distance as to MUN St. John’s campus – that’s 692km!
• The Division of Science will host Toonie Tuesday Techie Trivia, where each right answer will win you a chocolate toonie.
• Scholarship Celebration will honour held for winners of entrance scholarships.
• Grenfell College Student Union’s trivia night in the Backlot.
Wednesday, Oct 28:
• The public is invited to attend Qi Gong and/or Introduction to Belly Dancing, both being facilitated by experts in the Corner Brook community to promote alternative health practices, reduce stress and have fun! Qi Gong will be held 1:30-2:30 p.m. and belly dancing will take place 7-8 p.m.; both events will be held in the Grenfell gymnasium.
Thursday, Oct. 29:
• The Western Regional School of Nursing will hold its annual health fair from 9:30-11:30 a.m. It is open to the general public this year. Stations will be available for checking blood pressure, fitness tests, H1N1 and smoking cessation and prizes.
• “Pie the Prof” will take place Thursday lunchtime. Students bid to “take revenge” on profs, staff, and fellow students. Proceeds will go towards the John Ashton Bursary Fund and the on-campus food bank.
• International Night will feature a fusion of international sounds, entertainment and distinct dishes from the different nationalities and cultures represented in the Grenfell community. The general public is welcome to attend from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the GCSU Foodcourt.
• Grenfell College Student Union’s Open Mic Night at the Backlot.
Friday, Oct. 30:
• The public is invited to attend a day-long Haunted House in the GCSU Foodcourt, organized by SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise). All proceeds will be donated toward various community projects undertaken by the student group this year.
• Students, faculty and staff will try to solve the real-life “The Mystery of the Grey Lady” in Ferriss Hodgett Library. Whoever finds the Grey Lady will win prizes! All participants are invite to partake in tea and cake that will be served at 1 p.m.
• Mardi Gras concert (there will be an all ages show) at the GCSU Foodcourt.
Saturday, Oct. 31:
• The Western Regional School of Nursing will hold its annual Teddy Bear Clinic in the Fine Arts atrium 12:30-2 p.m. Kiddies get to bring Teddy along for a check-up, and enjoy snacks, activities and face painting.
• Family Splash Pool Hour, 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Grenfell College pool. Space is limited for this event so arrive early – first come, first served.
