SUBJECT: Memorial University employee shines at national award ceremony

An employee in Memorial’s Division of Marketing and Communications has been recognized for excellence in the field of communications and university advancement. Communications co-ordinator Jeff Green has won the 2009 Rising Star Award from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE). He received the accolade at the organization’s national conference in Hamilton, Ontario in early June.
“It sounds cliché, but I’m actually really humbled to be honoured with this award and to be recognized by my peers, colleagues and an organization like CCAE,” said Mr. Green. “I’ve only been working in communications professionally since 2005 so I must be doing something right.”
A graduate of Memorial University’s Faculty of Arts and the School of Journalism at the University of King’s College in Nova Scotia, Jeff has been working in the university’s Division of Marketing and Communications since 2005.
Within the past four years, he has lent his keen eye – and ear – for journalistic excellence to good use. As editor of The Communicator, Memorial’s employee and retiree newsletter, he revamped the two-decades-old publication by placing the staff and faculty front and centre.
By engaging and recognizing readers through The Communicator’s re-design, Mr. Green has subsequently been recognized for his efforts with a 2009 Pinnacle Award of Excellence Newsletters (Print) from the International Association of Business Communicators’ (IABC), Newfoundland and Labrador chapter as well.
Mr. Green also plays a key role in a wide range of internal and external communications activities at Memorial. He is a regular contributor to The Gazette, Memorial’s newspaper, as well as today.mun.ca, its news website. He is the founding co-host of Studio 1024, Memorial’s weekly podcast, which was launched in the fall of 2006.
“Since he started working at Memorial, Jeff has made a tremendous contribution in the communications section,’’ said Victoria Collins, executive director of the Division of Marketing and Communications. “Jeff has taken on new opportunities enthusiastically and has applied his skills in ways we had not really envisioned when we hired him. His radio background, for example, has enabled us to create a high quality podcast and he keeps the Memorial news site brimming with news. I am not surprised and very happy that CCAE has recognized him with this national award.”
Mr. Green is currently working temporarily as the communications co-ordinator with the Office of the Vice-President (Research). He is looking forward to new challenges in the field of media relations, publications design and communication skills.
CCAE is the professional association of educational advancement professionals in Canada. To be nominated for a Rising Star Award, a person must have between three and five years’ experience in the institutional advancement field and demonstrate achievements and accomplishments in the institutional advancement field, demonstrate early success as an advancement leader, and demonstrate professional and volunteer contributions that indicate a strong commitment to advancement in Canada.
