DATE: March 24, 2009

Note to editors:

March 23-27 is National Co-operative Education Week during which universities and community colleges across Canada will be promoting the achievements and benefits of co-operative education.

“For Memorial University, the goal of co-operative education programs is to fuse academic knowledge with practical experience, creating highly qualified and knowledgeable professionals prepared to meet the demands of today’s workforce,” said Dr. Peter Rans, director, Division of Co-operative Education at Memorial.

Every year, over 1,500 Memorial University students are placed with hundreds of organizations worldwide through seven co-operative education programs: Engineering, Business, Human Kinetics and Recreation, Computer Science, Economics, Applied Social Psychology (Master), and Political Science (Master). Students complement their academic knowledge with practical experience, enabling them to become highly qualified professionals in their field. Employers benefit from the fresh perspective and keen work ethic of students.

Memorial University’s Division of Co-operative Education would like to invite members of the media to join in the celebration of its seven co-operative education programs throughout the week. Events include “Coffee on Co-op” mornings where muffins and coffee will be served to students, faculty, and staff along with the third annual Co-operative Education Student and Employer Recognition Luncheon which takes place on Friday, March 27, in the Junior Common Room (R. Gushue Hall), Memorial University from 12-2 p.m.

During the luncheon, four Director’s Award[s] for an Exemplary Work Term in Co-operative Education will be presented to students along with three Employer Partner 2009 awards. The four student recipients will be Lisa Emberley (business), Craig Harding (engineering), Kimberley Parsons (human kinetics and recreation), and Jessica Sheppard (economics). The three recognized employers will be the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador, and Tiller Engineering Inc.

If you are planning to attend the Recognition Luncheon, please RSVP by calling (709) 737-8815 or e-mailing coopdir@mun.ca.
