SUBJECT: Marine Institute students receive $60,000 in scholarships

DATE: November 20, 2008

Fifty five Marine Institute students received $60,000 in scholarships at an evening celebration on Nov. 19 to recognize their commitment to pursuing their chosen careers in the oceans sector.
The annual Fall Scholarship and Awards Presentation celebrates student academic excellence and leadership skills and is made possible through the generosity of local and national businesses, organizations and individuals.
Each year, the scholarship program at the Marine Institute continues to grow and this year was no exception. Newly added scholarships include the Algoma Central Scholarship, the Canadian Association of University Women Scholarship, PanGeo Subsea Incorporate Scholarships, Robert Gillespie Reid Scholarship and the Janet Warf Memorial Scholarships.
"I am very impressed with the initiative and hard work shown by this year's scholarship recipients," said Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute. "The ocean is essential to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy and the demand for marine careers remains high, so it is important to recognize and support these students as they pursue their education and training.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the tremendous support of the donors who recognize the immense value in supporting these students as they strive to become leaders in their chosen field. Without them, none of this would be possible.”
“On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I offer congratulations to all scholarship and award recipients,” said Joan Burke, provincial minister of Education; in a statement. “Our province’s future has never looked so bright and our continued prosperity is closely linked to the success of our young people. They are the ones who will guide this province in the years to come, and I wish each of the dedicated students continued excellence in academic achievement.”
Dr. Darin King, parliamentary secretary to the provincial Minister of Education, was on hand to address the award-winning students and present the Provincial Government’s Centenary Scholarships on behalf of Minister Burke.
Also addressing the students were Dr. Eddy Campbell, acting president, Memorial University and Iris Petten, Marine Institute’s Advisory Committee.
In total, 67 scholarships were awarded.
The Marine Institute is North America’s most comprehensive institute dedicated to education, training, applied research and industrial support for the oceans industries.
