SUBJECT: Harris Centre to host public event on the link between education and employment on the Baccalieu Trail

The Baccalieu Trail region possesses many opportunities for employment in areas such as agriculture, fishery, information technology, tourism and manufacturing. But the region is seeing more and more of its young graduates heading to points west in search of employment, leaving many local jobs unfilled and possible potential unrealized.
Can the education system of the Baccalieu Trail help to address this problem? Can it be adapted to better respond to the labour market needs of the region? What changes need to be made to the education system to make it more responsive to the needs of local entrepreneurs and employers? And how can parents, local leaders and development agencies influence what is taught in the region’s schools?
To answer these and other questions, Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, in conjunction with the Mariner Resource Opportunities Network (MRON), the regional economic development corporation, is hosting a public meeting at Fong’s Motel on the evening of Monday, Nov. 17. The session will begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free. A reception will follow.
Dr. Gerald Galway of Memorial University’s Faculty of Education will bring his years of experience as an award-winning educator, former assistant deputy minister of education for Newfoundland and Labrador, and now as professor of education to address the issue of the schools’ role in regional development. He will discuss the crucial role of partnerships, politics, advocacy and the media in bringing about changes to educational programming.
This public policy forum will be held in conjunction with a workshop the following day at Fong’s Motel, where local leaders and stakeholders will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Memorial University. The objective of the workshop is to identify new opportunities for Memorial to work with local organizations to improve the social and economic conditions of the Trinity-Conception Peninsula. This workshop is open to the general public and registration is free. Breakfast, lunch and nutrition breaks will be provided by the Harris Centre.
