SUBJECT: Grenfell: Tourism students get firsthand look at best practices in Canada during Montreal-Ottawa trip

Five senior students in Grenfell College’s tourism studies program had an opportunity to travel to Montreal and Ottawa as part of a special topics course, Urban Tourism.
The trip enriched the students’ understanding of tourism in urban settings and allowed them to observe best practices in Canada, said Dr. Katia Iankova, instructor.
Areas visited in Montreal and the topics covered included:
- Downtown underground city & Chinatown-Old Montreal – participative observation
-Museum of Fine Art – cultural tourism in urban space
-St. Catherine Street, Chinatown – Ethnicity and multiculturalism as a tourist attraction
- Olympic Stadium, Biodôme – Sport events and tourism building urban infrastructure
- Botanical Garden and Mont Royale – Green tourism, parks and protected areas in urban space
- Place des Arts architectural complex – Festivals and special events
- Churches/museums in downtown – Heritage and tourism
In Ottawa, the students visited and studied:
- Museum of Civilization, Natural History Royal Museum – Conservation of cultural and natural heritage;
- Rideau Canal – Protection of cultural heritage in cities
- Canadian Parliament and City Hall – National capitals and tourism development
- Winterlude activities: Rideau Canal skating, ice sculptures contest and exhibitions – National capital four seasons tourist destination.
“The majority of the students are from Newfoundland and Labrador and the other Atlantic provinces,” said Dr. Iankova. “This practical work in metropolitan settings will complement the theoretical subthemes taught and discussed in class. It will contribute to their growth as specialists in relation to urban tourism planning, which that they can apply later in their home provinces.”
Dr. Iankova said the students really enjoyed the trip, both for educational and recreational reasons.
“In addition to being part of an educational tour, the students enjoyed the culture and night life of Montreal and Ottawa, including shopping at the largest underground shopping spot in the world and tasting the best of the best at the micro breweries of Montreal and Ottawa,” she said.
