SUBJECT: Think Green Olympians prepare to test their skills
DATE: August 21, 2008
SIFE (formerly ACE) Memorial has partnered with the St. John’s Boys and Girls Club to raise environmental awareness and teach basic business skills through their fun and interactive Think Green Program. The inspiring, fun and successful summer with the Think Green Olympics wraps up at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at the Mews Centre.
The Think Green Olympics will bring together participants from the St. John’s Boys and Girls Club who will take part in a lively and interactive day of business and environmental based competitions. Instead of playing sports day relays, these participants will take part in a series of business and environment based games and activities, such as “calculate that recyclable” where participants will have to choose what items need to be recycled to reach a target dollar amount.
Through a series of sessions, SIFE Memorial’s Think Green program teaches youth, ages five to 12, environmental awareness and social responsibility along with the basic business skills required to run their own profitable recycling enterprise.
In order to collect recyclables, and subsequently raise money for their club, the St. John’s Boys and Girls Club run two recycling blitzes a week at their Mews Centre (Mundy Pond) and Buckmaster Circle locations. These blitzes are hosted by Boys and Girls Club summer camp participants who will get to choose, with the help and approval from counsellors and administration, how to invest the money raised as a result of ACE/SIFE Memorial’s Think Green program. The reinvested funds will help improve the social and educational resources of the club.
During the Think Green Olympics these kids will not only learn about finance, but continue to develop their passion for climate change. From eco-friendly t-shirts to turning recycled bottle caps into Olympic medals the day promises to be full of fun and excitement for all involved.
Media are invited to attend this event.
