In March, the Corner Brook campus of Memorial University will welcome Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate to campus.
John Steffler, who retired from Grenfell’s English faculty in 2006, will deliver a reading titled “The Three-walled House: a reading of poems with some thoughts on language and literature.”
The reading will take place on Thursday, March 13, 7:30 p.m., in FC2014 (Forest Centre lecture theatre, main floor). A reception will follow.
Mr. Steffler will then travel to the St. John’s campus of Memorial University where he will deliver two readings. On Friday, March 14, 7:30 p.m., he will read from his poetry in the Petro-Canada Hall. On Saturday, March 15, 8 p.m., in the INCO Lecture Hall, he will give the 40th annual Pratt Lecture with an address titled “The Uses of Poetry.”
Mr. Steffler is the author of five books of poetry, including The Grey Islands (M&S, 1985, Brick Books, 2000), That Night We were Ravenous (M&S, 1998), and Helix: New and Selected Poems (Vehicule, 2003). His novel The Afterlife of George Cartwright (M&S, 1992) won the Smithbooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and the Commonwealth First Novel Award. His poetry awards include the Atlantic Poetry Prize and the Newfoundland and Labrador Poetry Prize. He has served as writer-in-residence at Concordia University, Saint Mary’s University, and the University of New Brunswick. Last summer Mr. Steffler retired from the Department of English at Memorial University’s Grenfell College in Corner Brook.
Pursuant to the Parliament of Canada Act, the poet laureate may perform the following duties: compose poetry, including for use in Parliament on occasions of state, sponsor poetry readings, advise the Parliamentary Librarian on the Library’s collection and acquisitions to enrich the collection’s cultural holdings, and perform related duties at the request of the Speaker of the Senate or the House or the Parliamentary Librarian.
