SUBJECT: Spring field trip reinforces Newfoundland connection to Italy

If you’re an Italian-ophile in St. John’s, chances are that you know Cristina Fabretto. Ms. Fabretto has been a St. John’s resident for 10 years and she estimates that during that time she has introduced hundreds of local professionals to Italian language and culture. A native of Venice, she has taught in both Memorial University’s Department of French and Spanish and in the Division of Lifelong Learning.
Ms. Fabretto has often had students express a wish to visit Italy with her or say that their own vacations to Italy could only have been improved upon if she had joined them.
Now the Faculty of Arts is happy to invite participants to travel to Italy with Ms. Fabretto.
Starting May 5, this 12-day program will allow attendees to immerse themselves fully in all things Italian. After an intense one day seminar in Italian language and culture led by Ms. Fabretto, the tour group will fly to Venice.
Participants will visit the beautiful Venetian islands in a private boat, cruise up the Riviera del Brenta viewing the opulent private palaces known as the Venerian Villas, tour the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padova and enjoy an al fresco dinner on the hills above Florence.
Ms. Fabretto has personally selected the areas this tour will visit, choosing them for their architectural beauty, cultural vibrancy and authenticity.
“I have been thinking of leading a trip like this for some time - my goal is that my fellow travelers come away having fully experienced the Italian way of life,” says Ms. Fabretto. “Relaxing at a café in the late afternoons or eating something for lunch while admiring the breathtaking beauty of the cities we will be visiting, they will have the opportunity to see things which are usually not included in typical tour packages, and experience the trip as if they were truly Italians.”
Guided tours of Venice, Padova, Verona, Florence, Siena, Pisa and Bologna are included and all accommodation is in four and five star hotels. Far more than a place to sleep, these hotels will be the backdrop for what Ms. Fabretto believes will be a remarkable experience, as they are an essential component of the history and architecture of each city.
Before departing Italy, the tour will make a pilgrimage to Sasso Marconi where the Marconi Foundation and Museum commemorate the day on St. John’s Signal Hill that changed the world forever. “Newfoundlanders,” says Ms. Fabretto, “like few others in the world, can truly appreciate and be proud of this historical legacy they share with Italy.”
