SUBJECT: PSA: A marvelous country to paint

Memorial University alumni and friends are invited to share an evening together with fellow alumna Crystal Parsons, B.Comm. (Co-op) ’01, as she offers A Marvelous Country to Paint, her presentation on one of Canada’s foremost painters, Robert Pilot. The event will take place on Thursday, April 17, in R. Gushue Hall on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
Mr. Robert Pilot, the stepson of renowned artist Maurice Cullen, was born in St. John’s, NL, in 1898. He followed in his stepfather’s footsteps painting landscapes which gained him recognition; he was one of only three artists chosen by A.Y. Jackson to exhibit as a guest alongside the Group of Seven at their first exhibition. He went on to become a member, and later president, of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and his work has been exhibited around the world.

Born in St. John’s, NL, Ms. Parsons currently lives and works in Ottawa, ON, as an independent curator, researcher, writer and instructor of Art History. She has a bachelor of commerce co-op (2001) from Memorial and a master’s of Canadian art history (2006) from Carleton University. Ms. Parsons’ exhibition, Maurice Cullen and His Circle, appeared at the National Gallery of Canada and will tour across the country in 2009. The exhibition will feature the works of Newfoundland-born artists Maurice Cullen and Robert Pilot along with a number of their contemporaries.
