SUBJECT: Memorial University students get street map for their future

DATE: March 4, 2008

Memorial University of Newfoundland is helping point those set to graduate in the right direction.
On Wednesday, March 5, a unique event is being held in the University Centre on the St. John’s campus aimed at connecting with those soon to be crossing the Convocation stage.
Grad Street Festival is an opportunity for students finishing up their studies to learn about life after university.
A number of information booths will be set up on the third floor of the centre from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Students will be able to learn about important events such as convocation, including the dates and times of specific ceremonies, how to rent a cap and gown and how to ensure they have tickets in-hand for the big day.
They’ll also be able to learn more about services ranging from diploma framing, class rings, souvenirs and apparel. In addition, there’ll be information about careers after graduation, Memorial’s graduate studies programs and the benefits of being a Memorial graduate.
There will also be entertainment, food and a chance to win some prizes.
The event is being presented by the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development in conjunction with the Division of Marketing and Communications.
The impetus for the event started as a simple idea: a ‘street festival’ for this spring’s convocation students.
Michelle Snow, marketing events co-ordinator with the Division of Marketing and Communications, brought her seed of an idea to Carol Tibbo, assistant director with Alumni Affairs and Development, and things bloomed from there.
“The intent is to provide important information to graduating students in a fun way,” said Ms. Snow. “We wanted to find innovative and creative ways to engage students as they prepare to graduate and move onto the next phases of their lives. When I discussed this idea with my colleagues across campus, the reaction was very positive.”
Some stops along the street include the Office of the Registrar, where students can find out more about graduation eligibility, while Marketing and Communications will have information about convocation ceremonies.
In addition to a stop to the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, where students find out about the advantages of being a Memorial graduate, there will be booths from the Centre for Career Development, School of Graduate Studies, the Bookstore, and the Marine Institute.
“Grad Street Festival is a pilot project,” explained Ms. Tibbo. “We’re excited about being better able to determine the needs of graduating students and respond to those needs. I’m particularly pleased with the level of cross-campus co-operation for this event.
“From the perspective of building alumni relationships, we are all about finding ways to help graduating students – our next leaders and decision-makers – establish their futures.”
