SUBJECT: Marine Institute to host International Marine Simulation Conference

Educators and researchers from around the world will gather in St. John’s, at the Centre of Ocean Excellence, to explore the impact of simulation training and research on the marine transportation industry.
The Marine Institute will host the 15th International Navigation Simulator Lecturers’ Conference (INSLC) from July 7-11. INSLC promotes best practices in the use of navigation simulators in the training of nautical ship officers and masters, and in research. Lecturers using navigation simulators at maritime academies and universities worldwide have benefited from the exchange of knowledge, experiences and views with colleagues at and between INSL conferences and as members of a steadily evolving expert network. INSLC is a conference of the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA).
This is only the second time Canada has hosted the bi-annual conference since its first meeting in 1980. The 2008 conference will include representatives from maritime universities in Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands and the United States.
The event features four days of presentations and demonstrations of simulation equipment from international manufacturers. Delegates will discuss the effectiveness of simulation tools and curriculum in training marine personnel and examine the latest results in simulation research. The conference will also focus on new and emerging developments in marine simulation including a presentation from the Marine Institute’s Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS) on simulation modelling and training for harsh environments.
Catherine Dutton, head of the Marine Institute’s School of Maritime Studies, leads the conference organizing committee. “Having this conference at the Marine Institute serves to highlight our unique simulation facilities and experience to the world’s foremost experts in this field,” said Ms. Dutton. “The quality of the speakers and papers at this year’s conference is unprecedented and we are honoured to have been chosen by the IMLA to host this pivotal event.”
CMS is internationally recognized as North America’s most comprehensive research and training facility for marine simulation and technology. The centre trains marine personnel to meet routine and emergency situations through simulation training and is involved in equipment testing, testing of operators, crew familiarization, and the development and testing of operational procedures and new vessel management techniques. It also conducts research into marine safety, behavioural research, and port development. Its marine simulation facilities range from computer based part-task simulators to large and complex full mission simulators, including a full motion bridge simulator – the only one of its kind in Canada.
